בנוגע ללולב ש"יש בו טעם", לפי שעושה פירות, ונק' "כפות תמרים", הדין הוא שלא מספיק שהוא ממין האילנות שמצמיחים תמרים, אלא הלולב צ"ל ממין אילן שהוא עצמו מצמיח תמרים. וההוראה: אין להסתפק בעובדת המצאו במוסד שבו לומדים תורה ולחשוב שבכך שייך הוא למין שעושה פירות (שקאי על לימוד התורה), אלא הוא בעצמו צ"ל אילן שעושה פירות – ללמוד תורה בפועל ממש! והרי הכלל הוא ש"לא יגעת ומצאת אל תאמין" – חייבים פשוט לשבת וללמוד בפועל ממש! ובאופן ד"כך היא דרכה של תורה .. חיי צער תחי'": כאשר הוא בעצמו יתנזר מדברים שמתחשק בהם בעוה"ז וישקיע את הכח ואת החשק שלו בלימוד התורה מתוך יגיעת נפש ובשר – כך היא הדרך להיות בן תורה! וכדי להצליח בזה עוד יותר ה"ז ע"י הקדמת נתינת הצדקה, והקב"ה ישלם ויתן לו הצלחה כמ"פ ככה לפי ערך היגיעה שלו.

Regarding the lulav, which “has taste” (because it produces fruit and is called “branches of date palms”) the halachah is that it is not enough for it to be from the species of trees that produce dates, rather the lulav must be from a tree that itself produces dates. The lesson is that one should not be satisfied merely with being enrolled in an institution where Torah is studied, and think that this makes him part of the species that produces fruit (which represents Torah study); rather he himself must be a tree that produces fruit – he must actually learn Torah in practice. And the rule is that if one says he “did not labor and he found success – do not believe it” – one must actually sit and learn. As the Mishna says, “Such is the way of Torah…live a life of deprivation”: when he personally refrains from the pleasures of the world and invests his energy and passion into Torah study with body and soul – this is the way to become a Torah scholar. And to be even more successful in one’s studies, one should first give tzedakah (whether financially or otherwise), and Hashem will repay him and grant him success many times more than the degree of effort he invested.
